Sandra Forney joins OPARC tournament committee

The OPARC Colonies Crossroads Champions Cup is pleased to have Sandy Forney President and owner of Impressions Gourmet Catering as a member of the organizing committee.

Sandy has been generous in contributing her time and effort, making many non-profit fund raising events a success, most recently the Chaffee College Foundation and its Telethon. John Mannerino a recent past chair of the Chaffee foundation credits her efforts as critical to the telethons success. The committee members are looking forward to her contribution to OPARC efforts in funding its Speech Pathology program. Welcome Sandy!

The 2008 OPARC Colonies Crossroads Champions Cup to Again Benefit Speech Pathology Program

Those present at the post tournament cocktail reception and presentation in 2007 will without a doubt remember the heartwarming performance by OPARC clients under the direction of Joyce Corjon, Speech Pathologist. Their performance was rewarded with a “standing ovation” and “encore calls”. The clients were thrilled from having performed in public – something they clearly would not have ever been able to do without speech pathology training. Visitors to speech pathology classes are universally impressed with the skill, patience, and knowledge brought to class by Joyce. As a consequence of this work, at least one individual has been provided with an electronic communication board that enables her to communicate “verbally.” Parents and other family members of program participants see positive benefits from the program on a daily basis – better communication, less acting out, etc.

Joyce currently teaches about 52 clients from five different sites a week and recently relayed this touching story. "A client who just started with me is making wonderful progress and I am so excited. He is blind and mute. His name is Chang and he works at ADC-Monte Vista. He understands some Korean and English. Chang is learning simple sign language and is retaining the signs I teach him from week to week. It is fun and a challenge teaching him since he cannot see or talk. He relies on auditory cues and physical cues to learn the signs. So, I actually have to take his hands and form the signs for him and verbally walk him through the steps for the particular sign. He loves coming to class and removes his little glove ( I believe this is his little "crutch") before we start. I make him smile because I am his crazy teacher. If he is absent, I am so disappointed. I really do look forward to working with him each week".

The goal of this program is to enhance the communication abilities of clients, to “normalize” their lives as much as possible. Clients who participate in this program will be able to take part in all kinds of activities common to all people, including working and socializing with friends.

It is our goal to make speech pathology services available to as many clients as possible, given our financial capacity. Your donation at the Golf Tournament Sponsor level of “Friend” ($1,000) will provide speech pathology lessons for one client for one full year.

OPARC features Tournament Sponsors with Daily Bulletin Ad

OPARC has placed a full page ad in the Daily Bulletin featuring testimonials from its loyal sponsors. The ad will appear in the business section on the 7th of December. The placement promotes sponsor participation in supporting the OPARC Speech Pathology Program.
